As one of the most fundamental agents of socialization, the social construct of traditional families had continued to be molded and transformed by events in history. Most families in the United States no longer thrive within the traditional boundaries and guidelines set by our forefathers. At first, families within the United States consisted of a father, a mother and a few children; however, due to historical events, traditional families shifted to include same-sex couples, single parents, and fewer children. In order to fathom the great extent to which family affects the lives of members within a society, the audience must first learn and comprehend the three theories- functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist- that aid in the clarification of the practicalities within a changing social institution. First, the reader will be introduced to the functional theory developed by Durkheim which aids in the explanation of the various functions that family occupies within societ ies. The functionalist theoretical perspective examines the relations between marriage and family and how these relate to other parts of society; it also examines how family and marriage contribute to the well-being of society. Even though marriage and family structures differ from society to society, the functions which they control hold similar purposes.
